Setting, lore, world, and backstory is sort of an alt-history to mix the supernatural and historical aspects, giving a different and unique take on a world setting. High-level remarks to differentiate New World from other MMOs:Īction RPG combat sets us apart, bringing a physical-based combat where your location and swing matters you can block attacks, classless progression where your weapon drives your progression harvesting and crafting beefed up over time massive siege battles (war, invasion, outpost rush) combined with combat and other systems creates an all-new experience. They want players to get comfortable with crafting for breaches, wars and invasions, Outpost Rush, and other gameplay avenues, all testing and bettering players over time. Skills remain relevant for roughly 8 levels before you learn new ones that take you towards endgame. Six dungeons / expeditions are just the beginning. 1v1 combat is one thing, but a scaled-up 50v50 war is "insane but really satisfying." Combat is grounded in reality but also features over-the-top visuals it offers a look into the supernatural and fits the overall lore.Īre dungeons leveling experiences, or important to the endgame?ĭungeons at level 25, 35, 45, 55, as well as during Endgame. They wanted to bring that action-y combat at scale into the MMO and are excited about the results. The combat-focused feedback led to big overhauls in that system, like reducing the amount of interrupts, making combat faster and more responsive, adding combat chains with finishers, better hit-registering, revamped weapon mastery, and more.Ĭan you talk about your combat system's influences?Ĭombat style influenced by Dark Souls and other RPGs. The Devs team was very excited and enthusiastic about all the work they've put into their title over the better part of the last year, including more PvE content, and more mid- and endgame options, including two new endgame zones, more quest variety, and an endgame mode dubbed "Outpost Rush" featuring 20v20 PvE PvP. I was hoping to see more of the meat of the MMORPG during our behind-the-scenes peek, but what we got was a walkthrough of the Amrine Expedition and a whole lot of promises for things we couldn't yet see. Pre-order now to join the Closed Beta on July 20th.Īwesome trailer, right? Admittedly, it's a lot of sizzle and little steak for the upcoming release. What is the difference between an essay and a news story? Jeff Light: So, John, tell me about this idea of writing an essay, and you have written other essays for us it’s sort of become an annual year-end essay than you do for the Year in Pictures. John really sat with the idea over the weekend and he came to me on Monday and said, “What if I write an essay-type piece exploring some those ideas about what happens when all the survivors are gone?” So that’s what we ended up doing. Often, we go out and find the Pearl Harbor veterans who are in our community – sometimes they’re doing special things, maybe we talk to someone new about their experience on Pearl Harbor and maybe their efforts to educate the community, which we’ve had several people very active in San Diego over the years do that – and we were coming up empty-handed. And a lot of the conversations were us having difficulty figuring out what to write. He really is our resident expert on this topic. John has covered World War II veterans for years. Kristina Davis: A week or so before Pearl Harbor Day, John and I had a few little conversations about what might we do. Tell me a little bit about that conversation. Kristina, as you and John thought about our coverage of Pearl Harbor Day, you had a discussion about whether to write a story or what you refer to as an essay. I want to get into that a little bit with Kristina Davis, John’s editor. John wrote this sentence: “Watching the local survivors over the years (this reporter has written about them dozens of times since the late 1990s), the reverence that greeted them was remarkable.” That line was a little different than normally you would see because John is talking about his experience as a reporter. 7), and there was a passage in here that was a little different than the usual John Wilkens story in which he asks how long Pearl Harbor will have its special place in the heart of the community. John Wilkens had a piece in Wednesday’s newspaper (Dec. But he later discovered a site where people could share and download GameMaker creations. "At the time, I only knew what 'download' meant."Īt first, Mors made games for himself and his friends. "The very first ones were extremely bad," he said. But he soon graduated to Mario clones that used assets ripped from Google Images and Mario Forever. At first, Mors used GameMaker to build simplistic maze puzzles and platformers. "I was the kid in middle school who would fix the teacher's computer whenever they messed something up," he explained. Mors had always been interested in computers and, aged nine, received a copy of GameMaker from a family friend. He also played Mario Forever, a popular fan game based on the original Super Mario Bros., with one of his classmates in the fourth grade. Mors rediscovered Mario through a legally dubious Nintendo 64 emulator. Run for long enough and Mario will enter a super-fast dash. Unsurprisingly, the youngster "kind of forgot about Mario" for the next few years. Mors played Sony's legendary system at a friend's house and soon persuaded his parents to buy one, too. The year was 2004, though, and the PlayStation 2 was the king of consoles. "That was probably the first 'real' game I played," he told me over Discord. It came with an impressive '10,000 games in one' cartridge that included the original Super Mario Bros. He grew up in Turkey and discovered Mario at the age of six through a knock-off NES console called a Famiclone. The fan game was conceived by a 20-year-old student known as Mors online. The big difference, of course, is that Generations and Mania were official Sega titles Flashback is being made by a bunch of indie developers for fun. Flashback feels like a blend of the two, with its updated sprites and assorted levels inspired by Mario titles new and old. The second, more successful title celebrated Sonic's roots with remixed zones and pixel art inspired by the Genesis classics. The first was an ultra-glossy platformer that revisited almost every game in Sonic history. These moves are possible in modern Mario games, such as New Super Mario Bros., but not the original NES titles.įlashback has two obvious parallels: Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania. Mario can also jump and slide down walls, granting safe access to higher-placed platforms, stars and question-mark boxes. Mario has a three-segment health bar, similar to the pinwheel in Super Mario 64, rather than the usual mushroom system that grants a one-hit shield. The overhaul won't be for everyone (my colleague Mat Smith isn't a fan) but you can't dispute the detail and consistency across each level.īy subscribing, you are agreeing to Engadget's Terms and Privacy Policy.įlashback doesn't just look different - it plays differently, too. Every asset, including Mario, has a fresh but recognizable look that truly pops on screen. The latest demo, presented at the Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE) in August, is a brilliant blend of green pipes, Goombas and bouncing Koopa Paratroopers. Super Mario Flashback has some truly gorgeous pixel art that is both distinctive and faithful to the portly plumber's original adventures. Others will be subtly tweaked or completely revamped to surprise players or provide a different challenge. Some platform and enemy layouts will be familiar to people who have played the original games. and three-dimensional adventures such as Super Mario 64. These include the original Super Mario Bros. The 2D platformer will reinterpret levels from many different Mario games. In the not-too-distant future, though, there might be another way to get your fix of Nintendo nostalgia: a beautiful fan game called Super Mario Flashback. There's also Super Mario Maker, legally grey emulation and, of course, the original cartridges if you own a NES, SNES or modern console equivalent like the Analogue Super NT. You can buy a tiny NES or SNES Classic, for instance, or subscribe to Nintendo's Switch Online service. If you fancy playing some classic Mario, there are plenty of ways to go about it. It would top its rival Playboy’s sales to start the decade, but missteps would cripple the magazine’s image before the eighties were over. Wood and Boyd enjoyed a holiday in the Bahamas. The 1980’s saw highs and lows for Penthouse magazine. Wood wrote in his autobiography that he had actually "pinched" Findley from Eric Clapton to begin with, further complicating things, and knew full well Clapton was in love with Boyd. Wood had "sort of a warped rock star wife swap" in which he had an affair with Boyd and Harrison had an affair with Wood's first wife, Krissie Findley. "Mystifies Me" was on Wood's solo record I've Got My Own Album to Do, while he was still a member of the band Faces, and was released one year before he joined the Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger, along with George Harrison, helped with some of the writing and performing). RONNIE WOOD // "MYSTIFIES ME" (1974) AND "BREATHE ON ME" (1975) Boyd went home to Harrison, at least on that day. Boyd wrote that it was "the most powerful, moving song I had ever heard" and noted that Clapton had identified with Majnun and was determined to know how she felt. Clapton secretly met with Boyd one afternoon in a South Kensington flat and played the song for her off of his tape machine. A mutual friend gave copies to both Clapton and Boyd. The name "Layla" came from the fifth-century Arabian poem-turned-book The Story of Layla and Majnun, adapted by Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. DEREK AND THE DOMINOS // "LAYLA" (1970)Ĭlapton used Derek and the Dominos' lone studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, as a more than 77-minute declaration of love to Pattie Boyd Harrison. Lennon used a shotgun shell as his slide when he played the lap steel guitar on this song. "'For You Blue' is a simple 12-bar song following all the normal 12-bar principles, except that it's happy-go-lucky!" Still, it's widely considered to be about Boyd. Harrison would, predictably, only have one sentence to say about his Let It Be contribution. In 1980, Harrison said that he had first written "Something" on the piano during the making of The Beatles (a.k.a. Her favorite version was George's, when he played it for her in their kitchen. However Harrison, according to Boyd, said "Something" was about her in a "matter-of-fact way." In her memoir, Wonderful Tonight, Boyd also revealed that Harrison's favorite cover of the song-of which there are hundreds- was James Brown's. Harrison grew as a songwriter between Help! and 1969's Abbey Road, during which his tunes were clearly about police ("Piggies"), the government ("Think For Yourself", "Taxman"), or generally about the human condition (of "I Want to Tell You," Harrison said that it was about "the avalanche of thoughts that are so hard to write down or say or transmit."). But the string of hits that Boyd inspired are still some of the most iconic songs in music history. Weston, as far as anyone knows, is neither a songwriter nor an instrumentalist. The couple divorced a decade later, and in 2015, Boyd married for a third time-to property developer Rod Weston, whom she had met in the late 1980s. Guitar deity Eric Clapton, one of Harrison's best friends, also fell madly in love with Boyd, and wrote much of Derek and the Dominos' 1970 album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, about Boyd and his forbidden love.īoyd and Harrison eventually divorced in 1977, but not before she had a brief fling with future Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood. In 1979, Clapton got his Layla when he and Boyd married, though even that didn't last. Harrison and Boyd married two years later, but the beloved Beatle wasn't the only iconic rock star who was vying for Boyd's attention, and putting pen to paper to craft songs about her. Though she had just a single word of dialogue-" Prisoners?"-it was the role that changed her life, as it was on the set of that classic Beatles movie that she met George Harrison, and began a journey that would lead to her becoming one of the most important muses in rock and roll history. Pattie Boyd was working as a model and actress in the early 1960s when she was cast as a schoolgirl in Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night (1964).
