Jeff Light: So, John, tell me about this idea of writing an essay, and you have written other essays for us it’s sort of become an annual year-end essay than you do for the Year in Pictures. John really sat with the idea over the weekend and he came to me on Monday and said, “What if I write an essay-type piece exploring some those ideas about what happens when all the survivors are gone?” So that’s what we ended up doing. Often, we go out and find the Pearl Harbor veterans who are in our community – sometimes they’re doing special things, maybe we talk to someone new about their experience on Pearl Harbor and maybe their efforts to educate the community, which we’ve had several people very active in San Diego over the years do that – and we were coming up empty-handed. ![]() And a lot of the conversations were us having difficulty figuring out what to write. He really is our resident expert on this topic. John has covered World War II veterans for years. Kristina Davis: A week or so before Pearl Harbor Day, John and I had a few little conversations about what might we do. Tell me a little bit about that conversation. Kristina, as you and John thought about our coverage of Pearl Harbor Day, you had a discussion about whether to write a story or what you refer to as an essay. I want to get into that a little bit with Kristina Davis, John’s editor. John wrote this sentence: “Watching the local survivors over the years (this reporter has written about them dozens of times since the late 1990s), the reverence that greeted them was remarkable.” That line was a little different than normally you would see because John is talking about his experience as a reporter. 7), and there was a passage in here that was a little different than the usual John Wilkens story in which he asks how long Pearl Harbor will have its special place in the heart of the community.
